What is 3D Printing?

3D Printing is the act of printing objects, with specialized printers that uses filament instead of ink. This filament is a kind of additive material, and each object created by a 3D printer is printed in consecutive, bonded, layers. While many filaments are plastic-based, some may also be composed of wood, nylon, and metal. Overall, using 3D printing is an extremely efficient method to create a 3D rendition of architectural blueprints, build a custom figurine, or a sturdy prototype for a product that you’re designing. It requires only a 3D printer, and some filament, of which a reputable 3D printing store will have both.

Of course, you also have the option of 3D printing from your home, by simply purchasing a 3D printer online or in a nearby store. You can also rent a printer; if you only need one for a few days, this may be the best option. Purchasing a printer can get pricey however, as while the technology has gotten much more affordable over the past decade or so, it’s still an advanced piece of hardware. Most quality printers can run from €250 to €500, and you will still require filament, as well as the software and design experience required to build a model. Good filament is around €30 per 1 kg spool. Ignoring the factors of design experience and the software, it would be at least a couple hundred euros to create quality product. If you’re looking for one to several hundred models, it’s likely more cost-effective for you to contact us instead.

But How Do You Get a Design for the 3D Object You Want to Print?

First, a CAD file is necessary. It tells the 3D printer exactly what to print, and requires specialized software. If you’re a beginner to 3D printing, it’s recommended that you contact an Irish 3D printing service if you want to design something but don’t know how to use a CAD file. We will discuss the details of the object in question, and design the CAD file for you. After that, and pending any approval needed, you will receive your order within approximately three days. For those who wish to build their own CAD file, we recommend using Sketch-Up, by Trimble. In our experience, it’s the easiest to use CAD software, and is completely free to use. When sending us your CAD file, please send it in .STL format.
